Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

Admin, a loaded question is the only type of question I ask, LOL. But seriously, am thinking about a newer/higher end CJ preamp, and just looking for generalities that help. I like your mindset regarding a good deal, as it makes the most sense and either would be a significant upgrade for me.

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

Thanks Admin. I know you might be partial to the ET7-S2, but is there much of a difference between the ET7-S2 and the GAT-S1, or are they mostly similar in sonic signature?

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

Thanks admin, thanks BigDog. I love the FR20, clean, smooth and magical is the best way to describe their sound. My previous speakers, the Sonist Audio Concerto 4 had tons of magic, but wasn't clean. The FR20 has tons of magic, and the midrange on up is just quick & clean & open. My "co...

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

Thanks AnotherJohnson, BigDog & Admin. My current amplification is a PS Audio M1200 monoblock (tube input stage, ss output). Speakers are the FR20. I also have 2 other preamps, a Levinson No. 523 and a BHK pre. The 523 to M1200 is by far the cleanest combo. The PV10AL to MV55 is the best for fem...

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

A little late to the party, almost 2 years late, LOL, but the sound quality differences between a PV10AL and a GAT-S1 preamp? I am in a similar situation of potentially upgrading to a GAT pre.

Re: Mini System with PV-14L and MV-55

Congrats on your PV-14L and MV-55. While I don't always have my MV55 connected in order to save on tube life (I have other gear too), it does seem extra special when I do connect my PV10AL to the MV55 to listen to jazz and female vocals that bloom.

Re: AXpona 2023

I went to Axpona 2023. Saw a lot of rooms. Missed a lot of rooms. The room with Stenheim speakers driven by VTL tube pre and 4 VTL tube monoblocks was the highlight for me. Speaker cables were nordost. I missed the ribbon panels that Big Dog mentioned above. The Estelon Extreme MK 2 were on display ...

Congrats on the integrated amp & the speakers. Please let everyone know how you like the jump over to Conrad Johnson, and how well the CJ matches with Sonus Faber.

Re: Hello -- New to group

Congrats on the Classic62 amp and the PV9 preamp! I have a PV10AL and an MV55. I had CJ upgrade the caps in my MV55 a few years ago and the amp sounds even better than before. I get tubes directly from CJ.

The sound descriptions of the Classic62 make the amp sound tempting.

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!

I've read that they need tons of power. My 45 watt CJ MV55 would not be up to the task, but do also have PS Audio M1200's that mate very nicely with a CJ PV10AL preamp. The M1200's have allowed me to continue enjoying tubes, but with only 2 smaller tubes to replace versus 7 tubes. But I still rotate...

Re: Pioneer HLD-X9 Laserdisc Player

Congrats on the Laserdisc machine! My old laserdisc player seems to not have a good picture quality on the newer tv sets. I still have access to an old Sony tube tv where it was initially connected to. The latest machine that I like is the Panasonic UB9000 4k blu-ray player that also plays DSD256 fi...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!

I heard the Magnepan LRS+ at Axpona in 2022, and those sounded quite good. There was a sonic limitation in that room, but it was the solid state amps that Wilbur used.

Re: Odd comparo upcoming

I've heard about MUCH, MUCH worse wait times for both mbl and Gryphon, as in years.
If you sell off your CJ, you will forever regret it. Though if you sell of the Levinson, you could regret that too, LOL.
If you really like both, then keep both CJ and Levinson and switch back and forth between them :)

Re: My current rig

What a wonderful system!! I recently had a sneak peek of the soon-to-be-released LRS+ at AXPONA, and was impressed with the entry-level Maggie. They were powered by a Magnepan amp, and my one of my thoughts is how much better they would sound with tubes :)
Congrats on your system!

Re: TV monitor analog input/outputs

I have a cheap, and I do mean cheap, DAC that takes the digital out from the tv and converts it to analog with rca connectors. The quality (both sound and visual) is so bad that even the labels for the left and right rca outputs are reversed. When I do serious listening from a dvd or blu-ray, my Pio...

Re: Classic 120 Question

And if you want to keep your Classic 120SE as it is, but purchase an additional amp instead, there is a used non-SE version of the Classic 120 at the music room (tmraudio.com) that uses EL34's.

Congrats on your PV10al (I have the same one). I know my reply is rather late, but questions 1 and 2 were answered already, but I only get tubes from CJ directly. I had a capacitor upgrade performed on my CJ MV-55 amp by CJ in 2019. The amp definitely sounds better than ever. I have not had the PV10...

Welcome Bart!! I buy tubes ONLY from Conrad Johnson directly. I have never, and I mean never, had a bad tube from them. Jeff at Conrad Johnson recently upgraded my 20-year old amp with new teflon capacitors and the amp sounds better than ever, (talk about standing behind their products). Their prici...

Re: 4k TV's, excited or just hype? What's your opinion?

If you can wait, older 4k blu-ray releases are between $12 and $15 on Amazon.
But some of the BBC programs, like Planet Earth II and Blue Planet, though still pricey, are incredible in 4k
