Re: Recommendations on speaker feet

I set my speakers on Danner Combat Hikers military boots that I bought from soldiers returning from their Afghanistan deployments. They were issued two pairs of Danner Combat Hikers if they were in special forces upon deployment, and many just wore one pair of boots and sold the unused pair on eBay ...

Re: Question about older C-J D capacitors...

Polystyrene and polypropylene caps have a different smell when you fry them, so I prefer a really good single malt Scotch and some high energy music when I fry componets to ascertain their construction properties. Mainly I just prefer the effect of the single malt Scotch, but my human is hung up on ...

Re: Safe ways to discharge static electricity

I discharge static electricity into my big friendly human. He takes relatively good care of my C-J gear in spite of my electrical abuse. He even gives me a shot of his Scotch now and then. Why you got a problem with static electricity anyway??? You sound like a good way to to discharge my doggy fart...

Re: What is phase inversion and what do I do about it?

Phase inversion is best investigated after you have had at least half a bottle of Talisker or similar libation. You should also throw the subjective review audio magazines in the far corner and .......... What you do about phase inversion is either switch your speaker leads and decide which way your...

Re: Any conrad-johnson ART Amplifier owners here? ...

The best buy in C-J gear is their used solid state amps. They get far below their deserved respect and are available at firesale prices relative to their sonic performance. C-J seems to be "hunting around" as to their actual place in the marketplace these days. In the old days they were co...

I don't see David Berning going back to the drawing board anytime soon because of this. Interesting amp, but it is NOT a game changer such as those David Berning has introduced.

Re: Biggest disappointment in equipment sound quality?

Many years ago I bought a subwoofer from DAC, and was appalled by the sound quality and the build quality. DAC was revealed for what it is, a catalog that sells overpriced junk to yuppies with overblown advertising. The woofer did not even have a curvalinear cone, being a straight sided paper cone w...

Re: New amp - Conrad Johnson MF-2550 and SE version ....

The low powered amps from David Berning may still be available where he gets rid of the output transformer but still gives relatively low output impedance. When his patents run out, his design will probably be the way any modern tube amp will be produced. His tube amps are often lighter in weight th...

Re: Conrad Johnson PV-12 Preamp

Most tubes that I bought online were not suitable for high quality audio circuits, expecially phono stages. I try to only buy tubes from Andy Bowman of Vintage Tube Services who actually has the knowledge, test equipment, and NOS tube supply to put you into some really good tubes. My C-J EV-1 phono ...

Re: What speakers do you like with your Conrad Johnson syste

I use VMPS ribbon monitor loudspeakers. The ribbon midranges use direct drive with no intervening ringing transformers and have only a single high quality cap (made from multiple parallel caps) in the series signal. The planar ribbon driver with powerful neodymium magnets is lighter than the air tha...

Re: Favorite cable company?

I have a dog that especially loves to sit in my lap when I spin vinyl, as it tends to get rid of HF noise that a lot of digital audio is plagued with. A lot of dogs will leave the room when the source is switched from analog to digital, especially early digital and early digital recordings. Some sor...

Re: Anyone running CJ pre with non-CJ SS amp?

My C-J PV-14L replaced a B&K Pro-10 MC preamp and was driving a B&K ST-202+ amp. I could tell a definite improvement, so I bought a C-J MF-2250 and got even more improvement. I once had a Hafler preamp and power amp, but the B&K amps were a definite upgrade. The C-J amps are a definite u...

Re: Conrad Johnson and Loudspeakers

I have used a C-J MF-2250 amp since 2001, driven by a PV-14L preamp and an EV-1 phono stage when playing vinyl. I used Vandersteen 2Ci speakers until I finally got the woofer cones to rattling in 2012. Since then I have been using VMPS Ribbon Monitor 1 speakers which use dual 8" woofers, a 10&q...

Conrad-Johnson PV-14L

I just placed this post because the PV-14L was not mentioned in any of the other posts. I really don't have much to say about it. I bought it new in 2001 and have been using it ever since. It is still on the original Mullard 8080 tubes and they sound as good as ever. Everything still works and I hav...

Re: PV-15

I use a PV-14L and EV-1 setup running through an MF-2250 amp. The PV-14L is the forerunner of the PV-15 and the MF-2250 is just a slightly smaller MF-2500. One night I went and got one of my big circular telescope counterweights, the 7.5# size, which is a big hunk of iron, and sat it directly over t...

Re: In which order do you turn on/off your equipment?

I generally turn on my equipment before I start drinking. I generally turn off my gear after I have finished drinking. If I have been drinking a lot, I sometimes turn off my gear the next morning. My old Vandersteen speakers have rattling woofers where I drank too much Scotch and fell asleep in fron...

Re: Where do you buy your tubes? From Conrad Johnson or ....

This is my personal general opinion regarding buying tubes. 1) Buy from Conrad-Johnson if you want the exact tubes your recently designed C-J tube amp was designed around. 2) Buy from Andy Bowman of Vintage Tubes Services if you want the absolute best tubes that your older gear was designed around. ...

Re: CJ DF-2 cd player

I have used a Rotel RCD-855 CD player since 1991. That is almost 23 years of service. I did have to make a few minor repairs along the way, but being a biomedical engineering guy, it wasn't a big issue. I know that its laser is about to die as well. Some CD's it has trouble reading. Things are gradu...

Re: PV11 cap replacement, original or upgrade?

Be sure to replace in BOTH channels with the same capacitor, to prevent any distortions between the two channels. At the age of your preamp, you might want to consider rebuilding it and preventing a cascade of irritating problems. I disagree with the part about C-J using the cheapest parts available...

Re: Conrad Johnson Premier 1b

One of my first introductions to C-J amplification was an article in Audio magazine by the late Bascom King, a noted amp designer, who did a review of the C-J Premier 1. The amp measured quite good, but not perfect. However, Bascom said that at the end of the day when he just wanted to enjoy music, ...
