Re: Tube of choice for P12's

I don't recall the specific manufacture off the top of my head. If you call/email Jon at TheTubeStore I'm sure he can give you more info. At $20 it was pretty expensive so perhaps worth a try. I just checked my email conversation with him and he just responded with "we'll send you something nic...

Re: Tube of choice for P12's

Really like the PV-14L paired with the MV-55. It's a modest setup (as was the goal) and I have it down stairs in our sunroom so I do more casual listening. It's really a pleasure to have high quality sound in that space. I will often just hang out with my wife while she is doing something and I get ...

Re: Tube of choice for P12's

I think this is why experience is so important. Specs are not going to be enough when making decisions such as these.

Re: ACT2.2 distortion/pops?

I also don't see how a cable direction would cause these issues, unless the cable was not seated properly to begin with and simply removing and reconnecting made a better contact. Or a cold solder in the connector and reseating the cable simply pushed it to a better contact.

Re: Premier 11 ( 4 ohm ?)

No problem. It's really just matching the color of the wires so not even a typical schematic so you should be all set.

If the unit wasn't altered, it should be wired for 4 ohm by default.

Re: Premier 11 ( 4 ohm ?)

First, welcome to CJO. If you go to the troubleshooting section of our forum, the sticky post at the top will allow you download our schematic files. There is a wiring diagram for the resistance settings for both the premier 11 and 12 (as it is the same for both). You can then compare and see how it...

Re: Oh! For the love of tubes!

Attn: Admin These tubes are used in the Input gain stage of your ART monoblocks, as well as my amplifiers. So it's reassuring to know that Derrek is on the ball. These NOS M8080 Mullards are designed on the Box anodes, very robust, long lasting and highly musical. Fantastic sonics in the midrange. ...

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

I think that's a loaded question. The GAT was the highest level preamp that CJ offered for that generation. The ET7s2 obviously wasn't but is still in the current line and #2. I think you could make arguments for both and I can't comment on their sound as I never had the opportunity to do a direct A...

Re: ACT2.2 distortion/pops?

Sounds like it's not a tube issue. I don't have a schematic for the ACT2 so going pretty blind here. I would go with the low hanging fruit. Very thorough visual inspection of the left channel components looking for any burn marks, bulging caps, poor solder connections, etc... Next I would get a non-...

Re: Bi-wire speaker cables conversion

You can always use a biwire cable as single ended simply by not plugging the second set of contacts. No harm in doing that although purists may object.

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

If you can get a GAT in there, I think you would be one happy camper. I'm sure it would complement the FR20. I know Paul McGowan at PS Audio is very proud of that speaker.

Re: New bee to CJ

Attn: Admin Do we have a tab / section where Gen can download a better version of the owner's manual for the Prem8A's, apparently it wasn't clear. Cheers mate, and do enjoy those finest tunes! RJ All the schematics I have are in that single download file. I'm not home right now so I can't confirm w...

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

That's some great gear. Where a GAT would fall into the mix is hard to say, but all we can say is that that performance compared to the PV10AL is going to be on an entirely different level. BTW- how do you like the FR20? Those made some big buzz when they came out but I haven't had the opportunity t...

Re: GAT1 versus GAT2

For example, our good mate Admin, upgraded his power amp from the Evo2000 to the ART series 1 monoblocks. These were CJ's top of the line at the time. However, during his upgrade experience, he was still using the much older PV12 preamp. It wasn't until he finally got hold of an ET7S2, that he disc...

Re: Conrad Johnson Prem 12 with Focal Sopra 2

It will be fine. CJ amps are great at dealing with dips in resistance. Awesome speaker by the way. I was under the impression that the Focal Supra 2 is rated at 8 ohms?

First, welcome to CJO. Great to have you with us. I too am a MV-55 owner. Really great amp. As for the rewiring question. I don't have a specific reference for the wiring diagram but in our schematic database we do have some speaker resistance diagrams for the Premier 11-12 series as well as the MV-...

but no idea if the fuse are 2A or 5A and anything else?
Pretty sure it's this: https://www.grainger.com/product/BUSSMA ... Amps-4XC38

Also, great looking setup. Just outstanding.

Re: Cap Upgrade: DIY

I'm sure there are some caps that are "more important than others." I wish I knew which ones were those. :) I think in some audio equipment there can be components that simply don't influence the sound. Things like digital volume control, input/output switching, etc... but when the compone...

Re: Cap Upgrade: DIY

I hear you. I think one issue is that every cap is going to be on the audio pathway on an amp like the Premier 12. Which means every cap could have a significant influence on the sound. How does one really know which ones are degrading after +20 years?
