Re: Old vs New Sound
Yes this is very true, in fact not pertaining only to CJ. Regarding CJ of course, their vintage gear was highly musical. Very relaxing, somewhat rolled off in HF extension and low level bass, it was the midband that captured attention. It had an enveloping affect, a sort of sound that wraps around y...

Re: Suggestions on a preamp for CJ 2275SE amp?
Definitely not! $1300 for a PV10 is way overkill! I had two versions, the last one being the PV10AL, bought for just $900 and sold for $990. Note: this is in $AUD not USD... so $900 AUD is only about $600 US! $1300 should be the price range for a used ET3 series, definitely not a pv10. Even a PV15 w...

Re: Suggestions on a preamp for CJ 2275SE amp?
Yes, I recall this episode on AJ's CA150... it didn't end too well. If it was the usual crew back then, LJ & Ed, the service and customer support would have been tops! Unfortunately, there's a new ownership and things are quite different now. In fact very very different. As pointed out, CJ is he...

Re: CJ Classic 2se preamp not good with CJ 2275SE amp?
Yes that's correct! The Mullards are now considered as NOS type, so a bit hard to find, nonetheless they are available at a certain suppliers. The Mullards are fantastic and at a high level of musicality. If you come across the PV12 that would probably be just about right, and those tubes are genera...

Re: CJ Classic 2se preamp not good with CJ 2275SE amp?
Yes that's about right. Any of CJ's newer designs or put as "refined circuits" where they've further minimised parts, with shorter signal paths enabling them to achieve a single high gain active stage will result in pretty high gain and output voltage. That's also one of the reasons CJ tub...

Re: M8080 Replacement LP260MSE Monoblocks
Mmm... now that's a worry. I've still got a few spares but not too many though. Looks like I'll have to source from our local grumpy tube supplier, he always works something out. I've been contact with Watford Valves UK, still have stock of Mullards. Not sure whether these are Mullard reissue but I'...

Re: I took the plunge and upgraded big time!
Ah! So now Mags has decided to do these mods/ upgrades in-house and charge the customer accordingly, well it was about time they did! These are actually the typical upgrades on parts that can seriously enhance every type of Maggie model ever produced. These are internal mods done, which will cost qu...

Re: M8080 Replacement LP260MSE Monoblocks
Yes that's correct on those Mullards M8080 tubes: 6C4 and CV4058 are the correct type. In the case of Mullards they're just referrer to as M8080. I always get my M8080 tubes from Watford Valves in the UK, price was around 16 pounds, about $32 AUD (Aussie dollars). My CJ techie also had other brands,...

Re: Working on my Premier 8XS Amps.
Oh! Nice one on the Prem8- XS version mate. These are really tops, especially with the EL34 config in Triode mode. CJ's XS versions were always something quite special, and superb soundstage depth. We ordered three versions of these Prem8's back in the day; Prem8xs, Prem8 and Prem8A, all of them wer...

Re: Speaker Cables (again)
G'day mate, nice one on those cables. My very last experience with Kimber cables goes all the way back to 94/95... when I first came across a very well known highend audio store in Naperville IL. They were also dealers for CJ and ML stats. They had two very top end systems, one using the ML SL3's dr...

Re: Oh! For the love of tubes!
Got an update from my dealer mate, the Nordost Qbase8 latest version has arrived, finally! It took a while for them to config an Aus version on the latest MK3 power board. He said it wasn't in high demand for two main reasons: 1. After the MK1 & MK2 versions were released, they were good enough ...

Oh! Nice one there AJ mate, and welcome back to CJO! It was about time you got back with your well written posts. Yes, as Admin said, I'm definitely a tooob chappy, there's no denying that. However, as rightly pointed out, our tube suppliers Down Unda aren't holding up stock too well, and their pric...

Re: Oh! For the love of tubes!
G'day maties! Trust y'all are keeping well and most of all looking fab! So my quest for that so called perfect SS power amp, is well still on a quest. This is now my 13th amplifier I've home trialled and just thought I'd look at integrsteds as an option. This one is the Burmester integrated 032, a f...

Just came across this post yesterday, wanted to reply last night but thought I'd get few hrs rest before the arvo run. So now, here's your reply! I've had three versions of the Premier 11 amplifier: 1. Prem 11 in pentode mode with KT88 tubes 2. Prem 11A in pentode mode with 6550C tubes 3. Prem 11-xs...

Re: ART 108A amp
Ha, that's a great post mate. Sounds like you're trying to scratch that itch... with the ART88. Reference to its cosmetics: yes agree, the GAT is a work of ART! Just like any of CJ's previous top of the line preamps: the 2 chassis ART series 1, Prem16LS, ACT2, CT5 and GAT. The ART88 doesn't look lik...

Yes, that's a definite. If you're happy with it, just leave it there and enjoy the music. It certainly seems like you've found what you're looking for and only then you'll be content with your system. Now, all you have to do is pour that Scotch and light that cigar. Oh, and do enjoy those fine tunes...

Re: Classic 62SE On The Way
Thst claim made on EL34's vs KT120's is not very accurate. Yes, I agree there's a certain level of musicality that EL34's can offer but even then there's a fine line of power with finesse that KT120's can offer big time! To say that KT120's sound more solid state... I don't think so. In which case, ...

That's a huge loss without a doubt. These kinds of personalities are legendary! They're one of a kind. These days, that passion is lacking, and w...

Re: MV60SE does not have Teflon or Vishay
Yes that's correct. The MV60/ SE only difference were the Output tubes, nothing else! The non SE version using EL34's was tops! The SE version can also accommodate 6550's and KT120's, which was what I used when I had the SE version. It handled both the Maggie MGIIIA's and Quad ESL's quite well, no i...
