I think it’s pretty clear. NO ONE HAS RELEVANT EXPERIENCE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.Nutsfortubes wrote: ↑Mon Oct 24, 2022 5:33 pm Thanks for all your great help in the fast replays.

The 5965 tube is not in great demand. I think it’s equivalent to a 12AV7, not the 12AT7.
If you’re truly interested in this experiment, 5965s are not expensive. Try it and then share YOUR opinion.
My opinion is that the stock tubes are going to give the best result that CJ was able to create in the long ago days of PV8 (3 decades ago). I owned a PV8 (it replaced my PV5. Later I had the PV upgraded to CJ Teflon caps. And eventually I replaced it with a PV11.
When parts for the PV series started to be scarce, I moved on to the ET series.
I would never have considered the 5965 as a 12AT7 replacement, but if you’re really interested in that swap, have a go.
We’ll look forward to your report.
It’s just stuff. I like mine. I hope you like yours. I probably like yours too.

From Jim McShane, 12AT7s They are closer to the 5965 in Transconductance and mu/gain than any other 12AT7 and they are VERY low in microphonics.
I pretty sure he knows tubes.

Sounds like you’re having a bad day. I hope it improves.
Lots of folks use tubes as though they were tone controls.
To each his own. Have you tried them yet? If yes,,what do you think about them?

Here’s another opinion. Cheap because most of them s*ck.
The 5965 was not designed for audio use, but as a computer tube -which means switching rather than audio frequency amplification.
I really don’t see how anyone could say they were not microphonic as a group, although there could be good specimens.
Every sample of any tube model is unique. There are good samples and there are bad samples. You won’t know what you’ve got until you test it or try it.
The 12A?7 series is interesting … they’re all twin triodes, but they have different gains, and sometimes different heater voltages. I know you want to know how they sound as 12AT7 replacements in a PV8. You may presently be the only guy in the world who is wondering this. The answer is as close as your PV8.

Hola Chicos,
This is the first time that I read your post Nutsfortubes...
The E180CC and the 7062 share almost the same specs of the 5965.

To reply to someone who thinks "this place stinks" takes an awful lot of patience... I wouldn't even bother!
And yet, two of our most prestigious members, AJ & Robbo have offered their sincere advice...
Good luck to the OP!

Re: PV8 tube substitute?
Yes, I saw it was an old post. I responded because of the snarky remark.
I think that the best samples of the 5965 probably will come from CJ.
At the same time, I was surprised that CJ had 5965s as the OEM tubes for two slots in the PV8. It’s been a long time since I owned a PV8, and I had not remembered this.
The 12AV7 was supposed to be a direct replacement for the 5965. And, of course, the E180CC is also a direct replacement.
My heart goes out to JF … his commitment to try to keep these very old units in working condition is certainly a labor of love, often lavished on things that are difficult to love.

Agree, to keep support up for such old hardware much be a great challenge.AnotherJohnson wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 10:21 pm My heart goes out to JF … his commitment to try to keep these very old units in working condition is certainly a labor of love, often lavished on things that are difficult to love.

Re: PV8 tube substitute?
It should be noted that the 5965s in the PV8 are only being used for the phono stage (along with the 5751s); the 12AX7 pair is what the line stage is using.

Re: PV8 tube substitute?
True. But it’s an even odder choice for a phono section than for line level. I’m not sure what they were going for.
