Premier 11A output transformer connection

Post by kimmo »

Conrad Johnson discontinued to use tapped output transformers when Premier 8 was introduced. Outputs were matched for 4 ohm load as standard, at least when Premier 8, 11 and 12 were in production. There was also option to match output for 2, 8 or 16 ohm load, at least when Premier 140 was in production.

However my Premier 11A does have 8 ohm written on shipping carton. So, it is most likely that this amp has been originally delivered with 8 ohm load matching. As there was no actual proof for this, I sent e-mail to address on the CJ homepage asking about color codes of transformer secondary wires and how the different loading options are connected. I was quite surprised as I never got answer from Conrad Johnson to my question.

It is nice as this site has been created and most likely there must be some inside information about this issue. So... do anybody know how different loading options were connected when Premier´s in question were produced? How secondary taps were connected for different loads, where feedback was taken and were feedback resistors and caps same for all connections?

Best Regards

Jeffreybehr,
I think can be useful to others as well so I'm going to add it to the Manuals/schematics database. Thanks!

By any chance, do you know if this applies to other units in addition to the Premier 11/12/MV60?

Thank you for your good advice.

Are feedback loop 47p pahase compensation cap and 2 pc paralell 5,11K feedback resistors same for diffrent loads. Is feedback taken for all loads from yellow tap, where speaker positive is connected?

It is good idea to store this information to some place where it can found.

Best Regards

When i bought my PR11A in 1995, my dealer recommended to have the 8 ohm configuration just because it sounded better according to him. I couldn't verify that myself, so I just had to trust my dealer. At the time I used 4 ohms Maggies, so I was a bit concerned, but it all turned out well. No problems wyth Maggies, nor with Audio Physics Virgo III (6 ohms), or my current Sonus Faber Elipsa which are 4 ohms.
