Re: CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

I also did some digging looking for the original for sale ad because I thought I remembered it showed the insides to see if the capacitor was like that prior. I did find it and it does appear to show that the dented sides were there previously. Here's the actual ad, and if you look at the internals ...

Re: CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

Wow this board is so enlightening. I had no idea that you have to load all channels on a M-Ch tube preamp or there could be trouble. I've been running my ARC preamp on two channels for a month before I moved it out to the main room, but that's not a tube model from them... just use some $30 receiver...

Re: CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

AJ, I appreciate all your advice. I spoke to one of my very handy friends local friends and he suggests I get this which is kind of right in line what you were talking about where we can test the caps... But first task is to test all the channels one at a time on a secondary system with a scrap spea...

Re: CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

Amusingly dumb task: I put a cheap 6 1/4" adapter on a 3.5" headphone plug into my Exasound DAC several years ago. When I extracted it, part of the adapter remained INSIDE the unit and is still there to this day-- I couldn't get enough of a grip on it with needle nose to remove it. Luckily...

Re: CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

I'm a little confused because it sounds a few think I opened the case and mucked around with the inside while it was still powered & live. The only thing I did while it was live (inadvertently) is change out the tube-- wearing gloves at that--which I don't think is going to blow me up. Full disc...

Re: CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

Here's the internals of the MET. The motherboard is just as tidy here as the outside. Although of course I draw the line getting underneath the tube cage, but everything else looks (and smells) okay including fully intact fuses as I suspected. One of the caps denoted by the arrow does seem to be a l...

Re: CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

Thanks for the responses (albeit a few somewhat snide in nature) :) I obviously did not do that on purpose and no I didn't research the internet to see if that task could be done before I did it more like after I inadvertently did to see if that's typically able to be done with tube components. IE h...

CJ MET1: two different units experiencing loud popping and crackling sounds. One I think I know why...

Hello all . So I have an interesting saga with the CJ MET1-- folks familiar with the unit please bear with this lengthy post :) First and foremost, this is got to be one of the nicest pieces of audio equipment ever made...just beautifully designed Anyway...I first picked one up maybe a half dozen ye...

Re: The six-channel MET1

Quick question: Center channel definitely needs a new tube as it's getting more and more static-y now and launching with a metallic 'ting' sound. Now i know which location is which channel which is very helpful--but i have one more burning question...can tubes be changed with the unit in standby mod...

Re: The six-channel MET1

Wow...the "sleeping giant" just awoke. No doubt didn't get much use over in its old UK home, I let it "burn in" a couple nights on low volume and all the sudden... Just wow. I've never heard such a rich, lush sound from recordings I'm extremely familiar with--I have sensitive ear...

Re: The six-channel MET1

I internally adjusted the output of the sub from my exa e28 DSD DAC control panel (highly recommended-will do a system summary pic soon) and it sounds much better now. DSD by its nature is full range with no system level tweaking "allowed". Speaking of DSD...want a disc to show off how lus...

Re: The six-channel MET1

The only question is...how to adjust the sub :) I don't have "high level" speaker connections...just the low level RCA input as typical HT...so obviously not "reversible". I think the "phase" control is just for whether the sub is in front or behind the listening positi...

Re: The six-channel MET1

Ah..the 250 is only 2ch...the MET150 is the only multichannel amp they have... One more quick question regarding the unfamiliar phase inversion the CJ does. I reversed all my main speakers and it's definitely "correct" with them now...but my sub now sounds a little "off" in timin...

Re: The six-channel MET1

Ill do that...remove them and install the three new Mullards in L R C and then experiment with the originals to find the two best for the remaining rear channels. Sounds like that rushing noise in the Center just may be the tube... I think those tube guards are to keep kids (and pets) away from thei...

Re: The six-channel MET1

No swapping yet...funny you should that pic of the plexy completely stripped...i was a bit shocked to see the manual mentioning only to remove ONE layer. Then you can "barely" get to them--and its a pretty intricate procedure to extradite them straight up. I would think i could take all 3 ...

Re: The six-channel MET1

Wow...a double fuse failure...one for the MET1 and one for the amp. The amp was just badly distorting a channel but Steve McCormack himself said it's 90% one of the two fuses per channel that's causing it(he's got to be the nicest guy in the industry). Anyway, all is good now...save for an abnormall...

Re: The six-channel MET1

UPDATE: I finally found the 2 replacement fuses...the 1/4 amp one was much more difficult to track down but i found it yesterday. Soo...good news and bad news. The good news is that the tubes came back with the replaced fuses (see pic...we have glow again!). The bad news is i now have an extremely d...

Re: The six-channel MET1

It most certainly looks to be a bad fuse now (even though appears OK), but even with schematic file i can't tell which fuse is for the tube control. I don't have a multimeter, but i swapped fuses and lo and behold then the unit wouldn't even turn on (cause I realized now the bad fuse would be in the...

Re: The six-channel MET1

Ok guys...I just checked the fuses. The plot thickens :) US power fuse should be T800...and it IS US fuse F1 should be 1/2amp...and is is 1/4. UK spec as I suspected US fuse F2 should be 1/4 amp...and is is....very interestingly T500 so 500ma which is 1/2 amp. Uk spec is 1/8 amp. This could be an is...
